Services

The aim of therapy is not primarily to achieve insight into the past, but rather to improve our self awareness. The less aware we are, the more we stay stuck in old patterns that do not work any more. Therapy helps us look at ourselves in a new way, which leads to new understanding and new meaning.

About Kathryn, a psychotherapist in New Plymouth

Kathryn has 30 years of experience, having trained and worked as a psychotherapist in Boston, Massachusetts. She returned to New Zealand in 2003 and has since worked in private practice and for Community Mental Health services. Kathryn now works full time in private practice in New Plymouth, and is a registered ACC provider.

Her work draws on psychodynamic and attachment theory, cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, mentalization based therapy, compassionate mind training and solution focused brief treatment. She is a member of the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation, and attends ongoing clinical education.

Sessions are shaped around what you actually need. For some people that is a short piece of focused work with a clear question at the centre of it. For others it is a longer therapeutic relationship that gives difficult material the time it needs.

Get in touch

If you are unsure which option fits, call or email and talk it through. There is no obligation in asking, and it is usually easier to find the right starting point in conversation than on your own.
